UBank Twitter

Posted March 10th, 2010 and last modified June 19th, 2010

Twitter is a social media networking site which has taken the world by storm. Australia was a little slow to catch on, but we’re there now, and so are many of your favourite businesses, stores and service providers, you probably just didn’t think to look for them. Your bank or financial institution is one of those service providers you definitely wouldn’t have expected to see on Twitter but just about all of them are there; some have come late to the party, others have fallen asleep in the punch bowl, but others, like UBank on Twitter, have been there since their inception and seem to be getting it right.

UBank and Banking on Twitter

Since UBank launched just a few short years ago in 2008, they were able to get started with modern communication techniques from the beginning too and were one of the first Australian banks to start using Twitter to keep in contact with their customers.

Unfortunately not all Australian banks quite have the hang of it yet, as some used their Twitter accounts to post only self-promoting tweets, while others set up a Twitter account, attracted hundreds of followers but have failed to offer any tweets, let alone any useful advice.

How and why UBank are getting it right on Twitter:

  • Banks on Twitter must be genuine. Twitter users can be ruthless against other users they feel are using the medium just for promoting themselves or their business, and while that stretches to users outside of banks, a bank on Twitter is going in with the cards stacked against them because no one likes banks. Therefore, UBank uses real people from their team to respond to tweets and provide useful information, and genuine answers. UBank is also honest about the fact it’s not one person answering all the tweets and the staff responding to the tweets on behalf of UBank sign their name and this enhances the integrity of UBank on Twitter.
  • Your tweeps want useful information. it may be a novelty to follow your bank on Twitter for a while, but if they have nothing useful to say, a bank’s tweets will fall to the bottom of the pile and be ignored. Instead, UBank make sure to provide links to online articles which might be useful to their followers and provide links to articles and webcasts of their Money Box segments which can help UBank followers make a decision about a UBank product, or better manage their money.
  • Responding to good and bad feedback. Twitter is all about honesty and while it’s nice to hear good things about your business, you need to stay on top of the negative press too and UBank’s Twitter team will acknowledge all tweets, good and bad and offer a solution to their tweep, or promise to follow up the issue, which can be done by direct messages or email, where more than 140 characters are required.

How You Can Benefit From UBank on Twitter

If you’ve used Twitter before, you know how quickly your messages and tweets can get out of hand, and the thought of trying to keep track of your bank’s tweets may seem overwhelming. However, following UBank on Twitter, whether you are a customer or not, can have benefits for your finances which outweigh the time you invest.

Benefits of banking on Twitter:

  • An instant response. UBank is a Twitter user dedicated to their followers and they know how and why you and they are using the medium. Therefore, you can feel assured that if you have a gripe, a question or a comment that UBank will respond within 24 hours, as is good Twitter etiquette.
  • A personal response. The UBank call centre is an Australian based, 24/7 call centre, but if you want a personal and genuine response and a phone call is not an option, you can still ‚Äòspeak’ to the same friendly UBank staff and get the same level of help and advice you would if you called the call centre, but they understand, the boss is watching right? Best to keep typing.
  • You’ll hear it first. UBank posts information about new products and updated interest rates on their website, but you may not have the opportunity to head to UBank.com.au every day. Instead the news can come straight to your desktop, with UBank also offering advice on the best products for the current financial climate, and whether term deposits or online savings have the most benefit right now.
